Swim Lessons
Swim lesson sign-ups are open for our pre-season sessions. Please sign up for notifications at this link to receive notifications when future sessions are available.
Group swim lessons are available at Hurley Rec in one-week sessions, with four lessons, 30 minutes per lesson. Classes are held Monday - Thursday, with Friday as a make-up day.
Please review the following swim lesson level information and choose the correct level and age group when registering. If you have questions about what level you should choose, please email swimlessons@hurleyrec.org.
You will need to create an account before being able to sign up for a swim lesson. Also, please note that class dates and times may change due to instructor availability and weather events. We will do our best to keep changes to a minimum.
Please take a moment to review a few important details before your first session:
- Facility Policy: While we are pleased to offer swim lessons to non-members, please note that we are a member-only facility. The pool is strictly reserved for registered participants during their scheduled lesson times.
- Check-In & Attendance: Please head to the upper pavilion upon arrival, where check-in and attendance will be taken.
- Pool Deck Policy: To ensure a safe and focused learning environment, parents and siblings are asked to remain off the pool deck during lessons. The instructor will bring your child directly back to the pavilion area once the lesson finishes.
Maximize Your Child's Progress This Summer!
If you want to fast-track your child's swimming skills, we highly encourage you to consider a pool membership. Consistent practice outside of lessons makes a massive difference. In fact, we frequently see children come to camp as non-swimmers and, thanks to regular pool time, finish the summer confidently passing the deep-end swim test!

PLEASE NOTE:
PARENT AND CHILD CLASSES ARE FOR CHILDREN YOUNGER THAN 3. THIS LEVEL IS NOT PROVIDED AT THIS TIME.
PRESCHOOL AGE GROUP IS FOR CHILDREN 3 TO 5 YEARS OLD.
LEARN TO SWIM AGE GROUP IS FOR CHILDREN 6 AND OLDER.

LEVEL 1 – INTRODUCTION TO WATER SKILLS
Goals: Supported float and glide on front and back • Alternating arm and leg action skills • Fully submerge face for 3 seconds • Enter and exit the pool • Walk 5 yards in chest-deep water • Beginner swimmer • All skills are done with support • For swimmers that do not put their face in or head under the water
LEVEL 2 – FUNDAMENTAL AQUATIC SKILLS
Goals: Hold breath and fully submerge head for 3 sec. • Unsupported floating and kicking on front and back 5 sec. • Rhythmic breathing 10 times • Combined stroke on front and back 5 yards • Step from side into chest-deep water then float or tread for 15 seconds • Learn to swim independently on front and back
LEVEL 3 – STROKE DEVELOPMENT
Goals: Jumping into deep water • Diving from a seated or kneeling position • Treading water for 1 minute • Front crawl and back crawl 25 yards • Rotary breathing • Elementary backstroke 25 yards • Learn to swim in deep water
LEVEL 4 – STROKE IMPROVEMENT
Goals: Dives from compact and stride positions • Breaststroke 15 yards • Front and back crawl stroke 25 yards • Tread water 2 minutes • Butterfly 15 yards • Elementary backstroke 25 yards • Swim underwater 3-5 body lengths • Learn to swim all swim strokes
LEVEL 5 – STROKE REFINEMENT
Goals: Breaststroke 25 yards • Back crawl 25 yards • Front crawl 50 yards • Elementary backstroke 50 yards • Tread water 2 minutes with 2 different kicks • Shallow dive
